Frequently Asked Questions
Wisdom Pools and Landscapes are currently offering services to Wisdom Homes customers only.
A pergola is essentially a type of roof that extends over a section of the outside of your house or exists as a free-standing structure in your garden. Some pergolas give you the benefit of being able to sit outside whatever the weather as some designs of high-quality pergolas offer UV protection and are waterproof.
Pergolas come in a range of designs from basic timber frames, steel and aluminium structures with polycarbonate roofing sheets and insulated panels, to louvred opening systems and Colorbond® steel. You can choose to add lighting, heating, cooling and side panels to your pergola too.
A deck is another word for a patio, although a deck is usually made of wood or another type of composite material, rather than tiles or concrete like a patio. Decks are raised from the ground and allow seamless access from your home to an outside area or complement a pool or spa area. Decks are perfect for outdoor seating, entertaining and outdoor kitchens. And with the benefit of a pergola covering, they can be used all year round.
The price of pergola and deck depend on a variety of factors. With pergolas you have a choice of build material and automation so this will determine price, as well as the size of the area you’re covering. With a deck, the cost is influenced by the materials used, either timber or a modern composite material, and the size.
To build a pergola the cost will be anywhere between $5,000 -$15,000 or more pending all factors mentioned above.
Decks are built from a variety of different woods which all vary in price. Composite materials can be more expensive but because they don’t weather and are extremely durable, long-term maintenance costs are a great deal cheaper. The expected average cost of decking would also be between $5,000 -$15,000 pending all factors above.
You can build a deck without council approval but there are very specific regulations about what you can build without approval. This means your deck has to comply with the local regulations specific to your area.
You should always check with your local council what their regulations are and your local NSW council will be able to offer assistance to ensure you follow the guidelines.
If you are looking to build with Wisdom Pools and Landscapes, we will look after the approvals for you. We have dealt with many of Sydney’s local councils for over 10 years, so we can offer guidance on whether your structure needs approval and guide you through this process if it does.
If you don’t need approval for your deck and pergola, you could be enjoying your new outdoor space in a matter of weeks. Once we’ve conducted a check measure of your space, and you’ve chosen your options (design, size, materials, extra features) we could have your deck and pergola between 2-6 weeks pending all factors or more. It’s best to chat to us about your specific requirements before we can provide an accurate estimate for you.
There are many different types of material on the market to build a contemporary and attractive deck. Most natural timber options will require some maintenance to keep them in good condition.
The most popular timber options include:
- Treated pine - takes paint and stain well so you can make your deck any colour you want.
- Jarrah – a beautiful red timber that can be used in fire-prone areas.
- Blackbutt – highly fire-resistant with a consistent pale brown colour which can be stained.
- Spotted Gum – good for bushfire areas and often plantation grown making it a sustainable timber.
- Merbau – less expensive and highly durable, look for sustainably grown options.
- Ironbark – dense, heavy and durable this is highly fire, termite and rot resistant.
The other alternative is a composite material made from wood and plastic. Many brands are made using recycled materials so are a great environmentally friendly choice. Designed to withstand extreme temperatures, these are durable, require very little maintenance and look exactly like wood.
We have a wide range of materials available and can design and build your deck to suit your location, lifestyle and budget.
The range of pergolas designs available is extremely varied from solid aluminium structures to simple timber frames. Your pergola should offer privacy and sunshade, as well as all-weather protection if required, and be low maintenance and importantly, create a complementary aesthetic to the rest of your home.
We are your local Sydney pergola builder so we can offer advice and design ideas of what would suit your house and needs.
Options available include:
- Basic timber structures that allow creeping and trailing plants to grow through the wooden slats to provide natural sun shading.
- Metal pergolas, such as ColorbondÆ steel which won’t rust and require less structural support than timber.
- Aluminium pergolas are lightweight, rust-proof and come in a range of colours.
There are different types of roofing for your pergola depending on whether your roof is slated, enclosed, flat, pitched or thatched. These include:
- Steel sheets
- Timber slats that allow plant cover
- Polycarbonate panels
- Insulated roofs
- Louvred opening roof systems
- ColorbondÆ
